Proper mounting is essential:
- Clean Surfaces: Wipe the component and heat sink base with isopropyl alcohol to remove oils and debris.
- Apply TIM Correctly: Use the recommended amount (often a pea-sized dot or thin line for CPUs). For other surfaces, spread a thin, even layer covering the entire contact area.
- Align Carefully: Place the heat sink squarely on the component, avoiding sliding motions that can create air pockets.
- Apply Even Pressure: Use the prescribed mounting hardware (spring screws, clips, retention brackets). Follow the cross-pattern tightening sequence (like a car wheel) to ensure the base seats flatly without rocking. Adhere to the specified torque if given.
- Verify Contact: After disassembly, check the TIM spread pattern—it should indicate full, even coverage.
